How Parents Find Childcare in 2026: Google, AI Search, Social Media & Ads
Sep 19, 2026
If your childcare center has empty spaces, one of the first questions to ask is not simply, “Should we run more ads?”
Ask this instead:
Can parents actually find us when they start looking for childcare?
The way families search for childcare is changing.
A parent may start on Google with “daycare near me.” Another might look through Facebook recommendations. Someone else may ask ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI tool to help them find highly rated childcare near their home or workplace.
Then they check your reviews.
Then your website.
Then your social media.
And only after all of that might they fill out an inquiry form or book a tour.
That is why childcare marketing in 2026 needs to be about visibility across the entire parent search journey, not simply posting three times a week or turning on a Facebook ad.
How Are Parents Finding Childcare in 2026?
Parents are increasingly using several online channels before choosing a local business.
BrightLocal's 2026 consumer research found that 84% of consumers had searched online for a local business within the previous three months, and three out of four used more than one channel during their most recent local search.
That matters for childcare centers.
Choosing childcare is not the same as choosing where to order dinner. Parents are making a high-trust decision involving their child.
They are going to research you.
Your childcare center needs to be discoverable when they search and convincing when they investigate.
Here are the four areas I believe childcare owners need to pay attention to now.
1. Google Is Still an Important Part of Childcare Search
When a parent needs childcare, Google is still one of the most obvious places to begin.
They might search:
-
daycare near me
-
preschool near me
-
infant care in [city]
-
toddler daycare in [neighborhood]
-
childcare with openings
-
after-school care near me
-
best daycare in [city]
This is why your Google Business Profile, website and local search presence matter.
Your profile should clearly communicate what you offer, where you are located, which ages you serve, how families can contact you and what makes your program different.
And don't forget the photographs.
Parents want to see the environment their child may be spending eight or nine hours a day in.
Your classrooms, educators, playground, activities and everyday moments all help answer the unspoken parent question:
“Can I picture my child here?”
2. AI Search Is Becoming Part of Local Discovery
This is the shift childcare owners need to start paying attention to.
Parents no longer have to search with short phrases.
They can ask an AI tool something much more specific, such as:
“Find a highly rated preschool near San Mateo that has hands-on activities and limited screen time.”
Or:
“What are some good childcare centers near me with outdoor play and a strong preschool program?”
That is a completely different type of search.
BrightLocal reported in 2026 that 45% of U.S. consumers surveyed had used AI tools for local business recommendations during the previous year, up substantially from the year before.
Another 2026 study found that consumers are not necessarily replacing Google with AI. Instead, they are using several sources together. Among people using AI for local discovery, many still go back to Google, business websites and other sources to verify what they were told.
That's an important distinction.
You don't need to choose between Google SEO and AI search.
You need a strong digital presence that helps both humans and machines understand your childcare center.
Your website should clearly state:
-
where you are located
-
ages you serve
-
programs you offer
-
hours of operation
-
educational philosophy
-
special programs or enrichment
-
neighborhoods or schools you serve
-
what makes your center different
-
how to schedule a tour
-
frequently asked parent questions
Clear information gives search engines and AI platforms more context about your business.
And recent research into local AI search found that business websites remain an important source of information used by AI systems when producing local recommendations.
Your website isn't dead.
Quite the opposite.
3. Reviews Are Now Part of Your Visibility Strategy
Parents aren't just searching for a daycare.
They are searching for evidence that they can trust you.
That's where reviews become incredibly important.
BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, with consumers increasingly paying attention to recent reviews and consistent experiences across multiple reviews.
For childcare centers, reviews can tell a much bigger story than a five-star rating.
Imagine a parent repeatedly seeing comments about:
“Teachers who genuinely know my child.”
“Wonderful communication.”
“My daughter runs inside every morning.”
“They made us feel like family.”
“Beautiful activities and caring educators.”
Those recurring themes help reinforce your positioning.
And here's something else center owners often miss.
Old reviews alone aren't enough.
You need a simple system for consistently asking current families to share their experiences.
Your online reputation should show parents that your childcare center is active, trusted and serving happy families today.
4. Social Media Helps Parents Verify What They Found
This is why I don't believe organic social media is useless.
But I also don't believe every childcare owner needs to become a full-time content creator.
Social media has a different job.
It helps parents see your childcare center in motion.
Your website might say that you provide hands-on learning.
Instagram can show the children building, experimenting, painting, planting or exploring.
Your website might say that you create a warm environment.
Facebook can show birthday celebrations, educators interacting with children, classroom projects and community events.
Your social media becomes the window.
In fact, BrightLocal found that after consumers read positive reviews, many continue researching the business, including visiting websites and social media profiles.
So no, one cute craft post probably isn't going to fill an empty classroom.
But when a parent finds you through Google or an ad and then checks your Facebook page, that content may help them decide whether to take the next step.
That is the difference between posting for the sake of posting and using social media as part of an enrollment strategy.
What About Facebook and Instagram Ads?
Paid advertising can absolutely help childcare centers get in front of local families.
But ads work best when the rest of your visibility system is already doing its job.
Think about what happens after someone sees your ad.
They may Google your childcare center.
They may read your reviews.
They may visit your website.
They may look at your Facebook or Instagram page.
They may leave without contacting you and come back three days later.
That is why I tell childcare owners:
Ads do not work in isolation.
An ad can create awareness and generate an inquiry.
It cannot fix a confusing website, weak reviews, unclear messaging or poor follow-up.
The New Childcare Enrollment Journey
The parent journey is no longer:
See ad → enroll.
It looks more like this:
DISCOVERY
Google
Google Maps
AI Search
Social Media
Paid Ads
Referrals
↓
TRUST
Reviews
Website
Photos
Videos
Parent Testimonials
Social Proof
↓
INQUIRY
Phone Call
Lead Form
Direct Message
Email
↓
CONVERSION
Fast Follow-Up
Conversation
Tour
Continued Follow-Up
Enrollment
And this is exactly why random marketing creates random enrollment.
When every part of the journey supports the next, your marketing begins working as a system.
How Can a Childcare Center Become Easier to Find?
Start by looking at your childcare center through a parent's eyes.
Search your program on Google.
Look at your Google Business Profile.
Read your latest reviews.
Open your website on your phone.
Look at your social media.
Then ask:
If I knew absolutely nothing about this center, would I understand within 30 seconds who they serve, where they're located, why they're different and what I should do next?
If the answer is no, adding another Instagram post probably isn't the first thing you need.
Fix the visibility system first.
Childcare Marketing in 2026 Is About Being Findable and Choosable
Parents have more ways than ever to discover childcare.
Google matters.
AI search matters.
Reviews matter.
Your website matters.
Social media matters.
Paid advertising matters.
But none of them should operate as little marketing islands.
The goal is to create a connected path that helps the right parent:
Find you.
Trust you.
Contact you.
Visit you.
And eventually:
Enroll.
That is the difference between simply marketing your childcare center and building an enrollment visibility system.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do parents find childcare near them?
Parents may use Google Search, Google Maps, online reviews, recommendations, social media, childcare directories and increasingly AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Because families often research a center across several channels, childcare providers benefit from maintaining accurate and consistent information across their website, Google profile and other online platforms.
Can ChatGPT recommend a childcare center?
AI tools can provide local-business recommendations based on the information and sources available to them. There is no guaranteed method for getting a childcare center recommended, but having a clear website, consistent business information, strong local authority and useful content can make a business easier for search and AI systems to understand.
Is Google Business Profile important for daycare marketing?
Yes. A Google Business Profile helps eligible childcare centers appear in Google Search and Maps and gives parents access to important information such as location, hours, photographs, reviews and contact details.
Do childcare centers still need social media?
Social media can help parents understand what daily life at a childcare center looks like and can reinforce trust after they discover the business elsewhere. It works best as one part of a broader enrollment strategy rather than as the entire marketing strategy.
Do Facebook ads work for childcare centers?
Meta advertising can help centers reach families within their local market and generate awareness or inquiries. Results depend on factors including location, offer, creative, targeting, reputation, website experience and follow-up process. Advertising works best when it connects to a complete enrollment system rather than operating alone.
If your childcare center has open spaces and you’re tired of piecing together random posts, ads and follow-up, my Done-For-You Enrollment Visibility Plan helps you build a complete system designed to help more local families find you, trust you and take the next step.
